Read on to learn more about urea in foot cream and how this wonder ingredient safely delivers a multitude of benefits for foot health.
WHAT IS UREA IN FOOT CREAM?
Urea is a naturally occurring substance. It is a humectant and hygroscopic formed as a natural end product of protein metabolism. What does this mean? A hygroscopic substance loves water and attracts water from its surroundings; while a humectant retains and preserves moisture. This makes urea an ideal ingredient in foot creams and foot care products!
THE BENEFITS OF UREA IN FOOT CREAM
pH Balance & Moisture Retention
Urea provides a range of benefits in foot cream. Its unique chemical composition minimizes the change in the acid/base balance of a product when other ingredients are added to that product. It also slows the loss of moisture from a product during use. And when used in the formulation of skin care products, urea increases the water content of the top layers of the skin.
Exfoliation
Urea is also known for its ability to exfoliate the skin. At higher concentrations, urea can actually unlock skin cells that are tightly packed together (think of those stubborn foot calluses!) without disturbing the underlying makeup of the skin’s cells.
Healing Promotion
The benefits of urea in foot cream don’t stop there. Urea is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredient. For these reasons, urea can promote healing. As an anti-pruritic (anti-itch) ingredient, urea helps soothe the skin and provides relief from dry, itchy skin commonly found on the feet.
Protection
As a result of the benefits discussed above, urea strengthens the outer layer of the epidermis called the stratum corneum, forming a strong skin barrier that protects the skin of the feet from trauma. This is especially important for people with certain conditions, such as diabetics who are slow to heal and can be prone to foot infections.
Dry Skin & Callus Prevention
In addition to offering greater protection, when a foot cream containing urea is applied regularly, extremely dry, flaky skin and the accumulation of dead skin cells that form calluses can actually be prevented.
IS UREA IN FOOT CREAM HARMFUL?
No. Urea is in not harmful in foot cream. On the contrary, urea is completely safe and extremely valuable to the skin of the feet. In fact, it’s been used to topically treat skin conditions for more than a century. Confusion arises because many consumers incorrectly associate urea with a different compound called urea-formaldehyde. This is a toxic ingredient frequently used in adhesives and finishes—causing many consumers alarm. Urea does not contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde is not present in any Footlogix® product.
