Toenail Fungus & Discoloured Toenails

Problem

Lifting and discoloured toenails are frequently a result of a common fungal infection. The yellow discolouration of the toenail can be very unsightly, causing a dramatic visual change to the nail. The toenail may be painful and appear darkened and thick with deep ridges. The toenail may also be brittle and can separate from the toenail bed. The Footlogix® Toe Tincture Spray provides an easy, effective, at-home treatment for unsightly nails.

CAUSES

There are many causes that lead to toenail issues, often a primary trauma (for example, a stubbed toe) is the most common cause. Extended wearing of nail polish and “aggressive” pedicures can also cause toenails to discolour.
However, toenail fungus is typically responsible for lifted and discoloured toenails. While fungi and bacteria are commonly found on the skin, the healthy skin surrounding the toenail and toenail free edge forms a barrier that protects the body from infection. However, if the toe and surrounding skin is cracked or cut (creating an opening), the fungus can enter. The warm, moist environment within socks and shoes is ideal for fungal growth—allowing the fungi to naturally overpopulate. When a fungus infects the toenail, the condition is called onychomycosis.
Seniors, diabetics and anyone who is frequently barefoot in wet, public spaces, such as gym locker rooms and swimming pools may be prone to toenail fungal infections. Also, anyone who wears narrow shoes with tight toe boxes or non-breathable footwear can be at risk.

PREVENTION

Toenail fungus can be prevented by keeping the toenails and skin on the feet clean, dry and trauma free. Wear moisture wicking socks and shower shoes in wet public spaces. Use the Footlogix® Toe Tincture Spray to keep nails healthy.

TREATMENT

Fortunately, toenail fungus and discoloured toenails can usually be treated at home with a topical toenail fungus treatment. Treating a toenail fungus requires a proven antifungal agent, such as Clotrimazone or Spiraleen. These agents inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms. If a fungal infection does not clear or is especially serious, it may require a prescription antifungal agent. In these cases, your pedicurist will refer you to a physician for toenail fungus treatment.
