The foot care industry is at a pivotal moment. In the first half of 2024, the challenges facing this industry were evident. As Footlogix®, we recognized the need to do a health check on the industry, which led us to conduct our first-ever State of the Foot Care Industry survey in September 2024. With responses from 213 foot care professionals worldwide, the survey offers valuable insights into the current landscape, opportunities, and challenges within the foot care industry.
Key Insights from the Survey
The Size and Scope of the Industry
The foot care industry is a major player in the global beauty and wellness market, valued at $13.2 billion in 2023 and projected to exceed $18 billion by 2030. With approximately 800,000 foot care providers performing over 1 billion pedicures annually, there remains enormous potential to expand services. A key opportunity lies in educating people about the importance of foot care and encouraging them to prioritize it.
According to the survey:
-
Most businesses are owner-operated, with owners actively providing client services
-
A majority work from permanent locations, though many also offer mobile services
-
Annual revenues average around $100,000 USD, with profit margins often at 30% or less
-
Teams typically consist of 1 to 5 members
-
Nearly 20% of businesses are newcomers, having launched in the past three years, while a significant number have been operating for over a decade
Industry Confidence and Challenges
-
48% of respondents reported higher sales compared to last year
-
74% are optimistic about their business prospects in 2025
-
Competition remains stable for most, but rising costs (rent, staffing, materials) pose a challenge
-
Staffing qualified professionals for advanced treatments is an ongoing concern
-
Many business owners expressed the need to prioritize mental health and scale back workloads
Customer Trends
-
Primary clientele are females aged 35-54.
-
Regular clients have maintained their treatment frequency, but many businesses face aging customer bases, prompting the need to attract new clients.
-
Word of mouth is the most significant source of new business, followed by social media. However, 48% of businesses do not actively promote themselves on social platforms.
Opportunities for Growth
Rethinking Retail and Customer Interaction
One common concern is that selling take-home products may reduce client visits. In reality, home care products complement professional services, reinforcing the value of in-person treatments. By positioning retail products as part of a home/maintenance foot care regimen, businesses can strengthen client loyalty and drive growth.
Leveraging Social Media
Social media ranks as the second most critical lead-generation tool. Businesses not leveraging this platform miss out on valuable opportunities to connect with clients, generate leads, and access insights to shape their strategies. If your social media presence is lacking, now is the time to act.
